Brief History of Van Nuys California 91388

Van Nuys is known for infamous Van Nuys Boulevard, a major roadway where teens gathered and went "cruising." Today there's plenty to on Van Nuys Boulevard that is equally as fun, and best yet, legal.

The city was named after an early settler named Isaac Van Nuys. Isaac founded the San Fernando Farm Homestead Association in 1869.  In 1873 the railroad was built into Van Nuys.  The Van Nuys City Hall was erected in 1933, and today it remains a center for government affairs, with federal, state, county and city offices sharing the premises with a public library, police station and municipal court buildings.

The Van Nuys airport hosts the largest air show in Los Angeles.  Each year, more than 350,000 spectators attend the air show. Band leader Horace Heidt bought the estate of film legend Oliver Hardy after the comedian's death. Heidt demolished all the buildings except Hardy's home and built in their place a large apartment complex that still stands.

Van Nuys High School, which Marilyn Monroe and Robert Redford attended, was showcased in the films "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," and "Rock and Roll High School".  One of the most famous film of this past century is "Casablanca," which was shot at Van Nuys Airport.
